Permaculture at Pangaia

"Pangaia-culture"

"Permaculture is the conscious design and maintenance of agriculturally productive ecosystems which have the diversity, stability, and resilience of natural ecosystems. It is the harmonious integration of landscape and people providing their food, energy, shelter, and other material and non-material needs in a sustainable way. Without permanent agriculture there is no possibility of a stable social order."

- Bill Mollison (The "Father" of Permaculture)

Pangaia-culture (Permaculture at Pangaia) has taken on a personality of its own, because of our specific needs and the needs of this land. It’s a unique dance - alive, spontaneous, adaptive, and ever-changing.

Moving toward sustainability in accordance with health and well-being is our main focus. We work with the land to create an ever-evolving, living entity. Permaculture is demonstrated at Pangaia through an efficient use of energy. We are off the grid, relying solely on rainwater catchment and solar energy. We utilize appropriate technology and environmentally friendly systems, techniques or tools whenever possible, small machinery when necessary, and satellite internet. We have extensive fruit and nut tree crops intermixed with nitrogen fixing coppice trees for fertility. Multiuse plants abound and supply much of our food, some of our medicine and fulfil various other needs. We have a hose for gravity feed irrigation from the pond to the garden, and as an alternative to human ‘waste’- we do not waste it at all, with our composting toilet. We have a garden located directly in front of the open kitchen so that herbs and salad greens are close at hand, and we mulch with our own leaves and compost. There are many other examples of permaculture here at Pangaia and we invite you to come and experience them.

People Care, teamwork, group decision making, direct communication workshops all contribute to the nourishment and growth of Pangaians.

The ethics of permaculture are “care for the earth, care for people, and share the surplus”. The Earth is our elder, our source, who we both respect and revel with.
